1909 - 1913

This is a pattern for two styles that were common during the period 1909-1913. The pieces can be combined for many different looks. This dress goes from day to evening with all dress pieces interchangeable.  The Guimpe (blouse) can be worn under it or not.  The Sample for View A was made from a sequined sari - imagine wearing it with a turban style headdress adorned with a feather in front and long gloves.  Don't forget your ostrich feather fan.  With View B you can indulge in maximum hat, high top shoes, and parasol. Fun!

1909-1913 Directoire (slightly empire) dress has princess seamed (boning optional) bodice to waist, with short or elbow length sleeves.  Two choices can go over that; kimono sleeve shown in View A or overbodice shown in View B. The skirt is sewn to the underbodice raised 2" from the waist in front and raised higher in back. The back can be trained or not, with either a square or pointed shape. Back opening has period placket with hooks and eyes or modern zipper. An optional overskirt can be added and modified to be straight or "V'ed".  Dress pieces are interchangeable. A separate guimpe (blouse) has a high collar, two piece sleeves, and buttons down the back. Period sewing methods are shown and modern shortcuts suggested.

   * Please note this pattern is not intended as a exact copy of any dress in the 1998 film Titanic.
   * This pattern's difficulty is rated Intermediate.
Saloon Girl, Can Can Dancer California Pants
Price: $14.00
Price: $14.00
Bodice, circle and gored skirts, petticoat, drawers, hat and stockings. All the components of the Saloon Girl pattern are separate and can be combined and layered as desired. The bodice is period correct with the pleats in back designed to accommodate the bustles of the 1880's. The bodice is fairly modest to allow modern foundations to be worn underneath if you desire. You can always lower the neckline and narrow the shoulders for a more revealing look. Feel free to substitute a chemise top and corset (Pattern #100) for the bodice.  It can be made with the 3/4 length sleeves or sleeveless.  The drawers, both long and short, are period correct.  The petticoat and the skirts are a circle skirt.

The petticoat has 3 layers of gathered lace at both the inside and outside hem. The skirts can be made in a plain circle or gored circle, with or without ruffles. The overskirt with drape front and bustle back are period correct. The cape is 1/2 of a circle skirt. The hat is "costume construction" as most sewers today don't have access to felt hoods and hat blocks. The foam gives it a three dimensional look that approximates felt, though it can be made entirely of buckram if desired.

Millinery wire enables the brim to be shaped.  The stockings are copied from a picture of a prostitute shown in the Storyville video.  Both horizontally and vertically striped stockings were worn.  The pattern includes supply sources, a bibliography, and historical notes.  Dress up like a B Western Saloon Girl or a Can-Can dancer and have fun! Twirling, kicking, sashaying, and kissing cowboys are definitely allowed!
