Flora Dora This dashing felt hat is pictured in Vintage Hats and Bonnets by Susan Langley. It is called The Fair Equestrian and is dated in Godey’s to 1850-1860. It is shown with a long plume and worn with a riding habit. There is another picture of it lower on the page showing wide ribbon ties attached to hold it on the head. The period quote is in part “It is exactly in season now, precisely what our gay belles want for their early morning or moonlight feats of equestrianism, which does more than aught else to being the bright bloom to the cheek and fire to the eye.” It looks like a smaller Gainesboro and could be worn during the times that shape was popular; during the late 1700’s and late 1800’s. Or maybe it’s just what the lady pirate is in need of. Aaarrrgh! The left side of the brim is turned up and tacked to the crown. The right side dips down. The front and back of the brim is straight. The tacks taken in the crown fastening the left brim to the crown could easily be snipped to allow the left brim to fall a little. The brim is nearly the same width of 4 3/8” all the way around, with the sides being just a bit narrower. The crown is about 4 ½ inches high and rounded. It comes in black, brown, gray, navy, and tan for $86. It also comes in forest green, Kelly green, maroon, orange, pink, purple, red, royal, and yellow for $90. A white hat will be $129. Please order your size from 6 7/8 to 7 7/8. This hat is not made until you order your size and color so please allow 2 to 4 weeks delivery time.
